This custom tour to Zambias South Luangwa Valley is going back to the roots of walking safaris back to where it all started in the South Luangwa, at Norman Carrs bushcamps. As soon as you are on foot in the bush you become a part of it. You can hear, smell and feel the bush as well as see it.
The South Luangwa is Zambia's premier National Park and has been dubbed one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. The concentration of game along the Luangwa River and its associated Ox-bow lagoons is amongst the most intense anywhere in Africa. It is truly an unspoilt wilderness, the likes of which are hard to find.
The Luangwa River itself, meandering across the valley floor, is teaming with hippos and crocodiles and provides a lifeline for a great diversity of both habitat and wildlife. With over 60 species of mammals and almost 500 species of birds, the South Luangwa National Park has earned its reputation. It is home to two endemic species, the Thornicroft Giraffe and Cookson's Wildebeest and is one of the best Parks in Africa to view leopards in their natural environs.
All walking safaris in Zambia are conducted with an armed escort scout leading the way, he is followed by your professional safari guide. The idea of having two fully trained experts at the head of each walk was originally conceived by Norman Carr and we believe, to this day, that it is the safest way to conduct a walking safari. Zambia has an excellent safety - this is essential since the aim of the walks is to track big game and to get you up close and personal with the animals you have come to Africa to see
Day 1:
Fly into Lusaka, Zambias capital city, then on to Mfuwe where you will be met by your guide and transferred to Kapani Lodge, set in idyllic grounds overlooking the Kapani Lagoon. This camp is a very comfortable way of starting your Luangwa safari experience. Each of the ten large suites is airy with a fridge and overhead fans for your comfort. Although walks are possible from Kapani we recommend game viewing from vehicles since you will spend more of your time on foot whilst staying at the bush camps.
Day 2:
After an early morning game drive and brunch you will be transferred to the first of your remote bush camps and met by your guide and host. He will explain the plan for the days ahead and introduce you to your armed escort scout who will accompany each walk. This afternoon you will venture out on foot for your first experience of a safari in the most traditional manner.
Day 3:
This morning you will rise early to discuss with your guide some of the bush sounds that may have kept you awake through the night. If lions were heard calling on the early morning breeze this will influence your guides choice of route; otherwise you will set out with hopes of picking up the fresh tracks of a pride or perhaps a leopard that was patrolling his territory. The morning walk is usually a slow and leisurely wander through the bush. Tea and cool drinks are carried by staff and enjoyed in the shade of a tree or next to the river.
Day 4:
Todays morning walking safari will also act as a transfer to your next bush camp. You will set out early and the walk will finish at your next camp, bags will be in your room and brunch laid out ready for your arrival. Here, as with all bushcamps, you will have a choice of gameviewing by vehicle or on foot.
Day 5:
Again the choice of a drive, a walk or a combination of both will be offered by your guide. He will discuss with you the areas and species that you still wish to explore and discover before leaving the Luangwa. Night drives are a popular feature of the Luangwa, the Park has a very dense concentration of leopard and of course there are a host of other nocturnal animals that will only be seen after the hours of darkness.
Day 6:
Transfer to Mfuwe airport and flight home.
OR...
transfer to Mfuwe airport and take a flight on to Livingstone, the home of the Victoria Falls. The drive from Livingstone Airport will take you upstream to a stunning bend in the Zambezi river and to Tongabezi Camp, offering wonderful views from each of the rooms. You can chose between the standard chalets or the unique open fronted houses that this camp has become famous for. You can take advantage of the sunset cruise on the Zambezi River.
Day 7:
Tongabezi is surely one of the most romantic destinations in Africa, but do not be tempted to stay in camp all day because a host of activities await. Livingstone has become known as the adrenalin capital of Southern Africa with whitewater rafting, bungee jumping, and gorge swings numbering just a few of your options. Alternatively take lunch on Livingstone Island and swim in a natural rock-pool that quite literally finds you hanging over the edge of the Falls themselves.
