Officially known as the Kingdom of Swaziland, Swaziland is the smallest country in Africa, but what it lacks in size and population, it makes up for with charm, culture and a relaxed ambience. Swaziland is one of the most easy going places on the continent, and laid-back Swazis are more likely to celebrate than demonstrate for reform. It's a complete change of pace from its neighbours in South Africa and the southern Mozambique.

The Kingdom of Swaziland has a very progressive and hands-on attitude towards wildlife and environmental preservation which has endowed it with exceptional national parks, featuring the Big 5 as well as more low-key reserves, a few of which allow unguided walking, mountain biking and horse trails. As well as game viewing, and adrenalin-filled adventure activities, a visit to Swaziland offers the opportunity to appreciate its rich culture and strong heritage, or just take time out from your day to day life, and unwind fully.

Swaziland's diminutive size makes getting around a breeze, so you can fit many activities in without having to stay in more than one place during your visit. Its close proximity to the Kruger National Park, Sodwana Bay and Umfolozi/Hluhluwe Parks in South Africa and Maputo and surrounding areas in southern Mozambique makes Swaziland a great add-on to any Southern African trip. Be warned though... many a traveller has lost track of time and spent many months on a hammock in timeless Swaziland!

The country is overseen by one of the last 3 remaining monarchs in Africa, King Mswati III, named after the legendary King Sobhuza II who was the 3rd longest serving monarch in the history of the world! The Swazi King is probably most famous for the Umhlanga or Reed Dance. This traditional festival reminds the people of their relationship with the king, and encourages young women to abstain from sexual activities until they are mature enough for marriage. The Reed Dance is held after three days of festivities, and occasionally the King chooses a new wife from the tens of thousands of Swazi maidens. This last occurred in 2004 when he chose a young finalist from the Miss Swaziland competition.

With one of the longest histories of the region, the country is dotted with bushman paintings, both recording the past and serving as startling works of art. Include at least one of the many cultural tours on offer on your list of things to do and set aside some time to spend in one of the local craftmarkets.
