Namibia is predominantly desert and the hot summer days can be uncomfortably warm. Namib-Naukluft Park and Etosha National Park should be avoided in the extreme heat (December to March). The Fish River Canyon to the south is closed to the public between December and April.

To the far north of the country the north eastern rivers may flood during the rainy season. Roads are often impassable or hard to negotiate and many pans turn into swamps.

South African and Namibian school holidays should be avoided as many the more popular destinations will be busy (Easter; June, July and August; and mid-December). Swakopmund is a popular seaside resort especially over Easter and Christmas so advance bookings is highly recommended, or we would suggest avoiding these times if you can be more flexible.

River rafting in the north of the country along the Rio Cunene is suggested between May and September as the weather is dry and pleasant and the water levels remain favourable. Dam controlled water in the Orange River, in the south, allows year round visits with less seasonal water level fluctuations. Whilst it is hot in the summer, you can sleep out under the stars, but in winter, we advise taking a tent and sleeping bag to keep you cosy.
