The sea, warmed in East Africa, is alive with tropical fish, whale sharks, manta rays and big game fish. Whether you are above with a fishing rod, below with an aqualung or floating on the surface with a board or goggles, Mozambique’s waters will not disappoint you.

Inland, there are a few minor game reserves and hiking options, but due to the very poor infrastructure away from main hubs, you are likely to be better served by a safari or trek in South Africa, Malawi or one of the other countries in the region.

Try to fit in some time in an old town or city where some fantastic Portuguese architecture is still prevalent and many of the places appear as they were when the Portuguese left. Our advice would be to go as soon as possible, before the wave of development swamps these reminders of its colonial history.

• For a honeymoon or a picture perfect island holiday, laze on the tranquil islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago or dive deeper for some marine life experiences or superb fishing.
• Spend a couple of nights on Ilha da Mocambique, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its mystical feel and old tree-lined streets.
• Dive with Manta Rays and Whale Sharks off the long white sands of Barra beach or its neighbour, Tofo.
• Take a stroll through nearby historic Inhambane and indulge in some piri-piri prawns.
• Head off to the some of most remote and beautiful islands in the world in the Quirimbas Archipelago.
• Take a dhow safari through the islands off Vilanculous, stopping en route for diving, snorkelling or fishing.
• Have a sundowner in one of Maputo's seaside bars, pick up a piri-piri chicken and then dance into the vibrant nightlife.
