Pony trekking, hiking or mountain biking (for the super fit) between villages is a different way of exploring. It's also a great way to mix with the local people and stay in traditional rondawels (round stone huts).

Stepping away from the landscape, you could spend your time well by visiting some of the villages and community projects in the area. With the country being so desperately poor, the local communities have embraced the challenge of furthering their own development. With the help of various NGO's, corporate sponsors or sometimes completely alone, communities are producing high quality craftwork that is exported globally.

Tapestry, beadwork and carvings are of a very high standard, and are sold at rock bottom prices in relation to what one might pay on a global basis. A visit and maybe a purchase from these communities will not only help them, but your experiences and souvenirs will help promote this wonderful land and people, globally.

• Take in the splendid view at the mountain fortress of Thaba-Bosiu
