With a little bit of reading, some elementary skills training and basic common sense - you are able to drive off into the wilderness of Southern Africa to view some fantastic sights off the main tourist drag.

There are two ways to attempt a 4x4 holiday:
• Guided 4x4 trails
• Self guided driving

Guided 4x4 trails:
Don't think that this is an air-conditioned packaged type deal. Some of the most avid and experienced 4x4 drivers in southern Africa take part in guided 4x4 trails. The guides knowledge of local geography and conditions is invaluable on serious 4x4 trails.

With a guided trail there are three options:
• Self drive when you follow the guide vehicle
• Self drive with the guide in your vehicle
• Guide driven and you back seat drive!

Self guided driving:
This is the ultimate experience for an adventurer setting off across Southern Africa. The flexibility to camp and drive in the region at your own leisure is unmatched anywhere in the world. When attempting a self-guided holiday, it is highly recommended to always travel in convoy - especially of you are adventuring into tricky or remote terrain. However, there are many areas and routes that are fairly well trodden and solo travel is manageable.

Why hire a 4x4 then?
Well, this is Africa and some of the sights don't have a tarred road up to the front door. Whilst the region has terrific roads between most major cities, some of the roads leading to attractions off the main path are very basic and require a 4x4, 4x2 or a high clearance vehicle like a bakkie (pick-up). The off-road driving skills required are sometimes very basic, but for a short distance or obstacle the correct vehicle is essential. Not as a necessity, but the comfort, cost and convenience of having a fully equipped camping vehicle is truly unique. There is simply nothing quite like it... and in southern Africa you have an area that is perfectly suited to it!
